Kitchen Design: Georgian-style residence in Ireland
In the picturesque setting of a Georgian-style residence in Ireland, Daniel George Kitchens collaborated with Thompson Clarke Interiors to bring to life a breathtaking kitchen that serves as the epitome of classic contemporary design. This bespoke kitchen project not only met the client’s desires but also introduced a touch of timeless sophistication to the entire home.
A space that balances classic elegance with modern convenience and style.
“The client loved the classic shaker style but wanted to modernise it with cleaner lines, brighter colours, and a layout suitable for modern living,”
Jaynie began. She said the kitchen design was meticulously detailed from the project’s inception, evolving as the build progressed to ensure a perfect fit. The final touches, such as the kitchen colour and handles, were decided upon later in the process. Adjustments were made on-site to ensure that every element reflected the proportions and aesthetics of the evolving space. The client chose the elegant in-frame Daniel George Kensington kitchen.
The spacious kitchen layout allowed for the inclusion of a striking large island, connecting effortlessly with the adjacent dining and living areas. A carefully designed pantry space, strategically added for practicality, provided extra prep area and storage for appliances. The client’s wish for a classic shaker-style kitchen with a modern touch guided the design process, ensuring that every element reflected their preferences.
“As the project progressed, some elements shifted a little, but largely everything stayed as per the design, and the client got exactly what they wished for,” Jaynie added. The client’s preferences guided the selection of appliances, with a focus on quality. Jaynie mentions that the appliances, inspired by what the client saw at the Daniel George showroom, align perfectly with the envisioned design.
The kitchen boasts several unique features, including a stunning Aga with an extra hob and additional oven, a bespoke glazed drinks cabinet, pull-out spice racks, and a breakfast larder. The centrepiece is the feature canopy and Aga centred on a ceiling coffer. Book-matched stone on the island, a quartz drop-down at the back of the sink, and glazed cabinets add layers of luxury and functionality.
“The glazed cabinets on either side of the amazing window seat add a light luxurious touch to the space,” Jaynie continued.
The choice of Daniel George as the supplier was inspired by the ability to visualise the kitchen against the Kensington display and experience the quality firsthand during a visit to its factory. The resulting bespoke kitchen, designed in a classic contemporary shaker style, perfectly caters to the family’s needs, creating a bright yet cosy atmosphere. The clients were delighted with the finished result, emphasising the seamless integration of living, dining, cooking, and socialising into this stunning Irish home.
Within the client’s wish list were two Fisher & Paykel dishwasher drawers, the Aga with an eye-level oven, that large island with seating for four, and a bespoke drinks cabinet/bar at the end of the room.
Jaynie from Thompson Clarke took charge of flooring and lighting decisions, opting for large format limestone tiles throughout the room. Lighting, selected in collaboration with David Brown Lighting, included impactful pendants over the island and a balance of practical and atmospheric lighting with internal cupboard lighting and soft LED running around the raised ceiling trough. “The lighting enhances the kitchen design, denoting the space without taking away from it,” Jaynie explained.
One significant challenge in the design process, she said, was posed by large windows in front of the kitchen sink, dropping lower than the countertop but her ingenious solution involved clever panelling and additional quartzite, providing a seamless transition while maintaining the integrity of the architect’s design.
The meticulous attention to detail in addressing the challenge of low windows, the bespoke finishes, and the thoughtfully designed pantry spaces now stand out as noteworthy details.
